Indianapolis has the Indy 500. Louisville has the Kentucky Derby. Not to be outdone, Washington, DC has the annual Drag Queen High Heel Race that puts all other sporting events to fashion shame. Men dressed in exquisite gowns, extravagant costumes, big wigs and heels by designers ranging from Manolo Blahnik to Jimmy Choo race down 17th Street NW between P and S Streets, NW kicking up their heels and kicking butt. Just as fun as watching the race is watching the rest of the crowd. Attended by thousands of Washingtonians each year, the High Heel Race is a Halloween week favorite. The event has been around for more than twenty years. The race begins at 9:00pm but for a good spectator spot get to the area as early as possible – 6:30pm is suggested.
