The Beautiful Birth of U.G.L.Y
If one were to look at theater productions as individuals, most have only seen them in their adult lives – full scale productions. It isn’t often enough that small audiences are allowed to be with the playwright as s/he gives birth to their new work when its presented as a reading for the first time. Sunday, November 15 at 5:00pm you will have that opportunity. Playwright Darius Smith and director David Ruffin invite you to attend the reading of U.G.L.Y at the Atlas Theater on H Street, NE.
U.G.L.Y. is the story of Geena Mae Jenkins, a young 13-year old girl whose desire to join the middle school wrestling team leaves her struggling to find herself in the small town of Beulah, Alabama. Dealing with adults, a spiteful school bully and an eccentric best friend, Geena, along with the other kids of Beulah, search for balance living in a world deeply rooted in physicality and exterior appearances. With sounds of R&B, jazz, pop and contemporary musical theater, this musical is an exciting addition to this generation of American Theatre. The reading is free and open to the public but an RSVP to email@example.com by November 7 is required.
