When the Broadway bound production of Stick Fly arrives at the Cort Theatre November 18 with an official opening night set for early December it will have with it a touch of Washington, DC. Award winning costume designer and longtime Washingtonian Reggie Ray has been selected to design costumes for the show directed by Kenny Leon and produced by Alicia Keys. A Helen Hayes award winner, his work has graced the stages of the Studio Theater, Arena Stage and the John F. Kennedy for the Performing Arts locally and numerous stages throughout the United States. Previously, he has lent his creative talents to shows directed by Debbie Allen, George Faison, Mike Malone and Joy Zinoman to name a few. In 2009 he was honored by the National Black Theatre Festival.
According to press notes Stick Fly chronicles what happens during the summer weekend stay of a well to do African American family at their Martha’s Vineyard mansion when the two adult sons bring their respective ladies (one black and one white) to meet the parents. A hilarious look at race, class and identity politics ensues.
